When we found this house in 2007, I envisioned it restored to its original beauty. Unexpectedly, in the process, we discovered so many wonderful things and people associated with the Belle House. We were introduced to H.G. McCullough Designers and told that they were the original designers of the house. Everyone said that McCullough was known for excellently designed houses. The original owner praised Mr. McCullough's time and energy and attention to detail and on the job supervision of the building process when it was built in 1965. It was an unexpected jewel to find that you (McCullough) still had the original blueprints that your father had drawn 50 years ago. During reconstruction, every single inspector and contractor commented on the quality of design, products used, and excellent condition of the house. But the special pleasure occurred when we were able to work with Julie McCullough Conley. Julie listened to our ideas about adding to this beautiful home while maintaining the Georgian architecture style. Julie listened well and looked at all our sketches and magazine pictures. The front porch, family room, loggia, gallery, office and master bathroom fit the home perfectly. The special details that Julie put in the trim and brick work were great. They look like they have always been a part of the house and enhance the original plan. I think that the front porch really makes the home beautiful from the street. The master bathroom is truly a luxurious place - one that I have never experienced in my own home. It is like being at a luxury hotel every day. I found that the reputation of McCullough was exactly as stated. You (Julie) followed in your father's footsteps well! Your time and energy and excitement about the project and on-the-job work were exactly as people described your father 50 years ago. It is nice to know that a firm like yours continues with the same great values that it was started with. It was a wonderful pleasure to get to know you! I feel that you are a friend after working with you. It was also an unexpected honor to meet your father and mother and sister. Thank you so much! I love the Belle House! At some time the need or desire to lay out a new plan for your home will arise. Whether you are planning a remodeled or a complete dream house design chances are you will have some hard decisions to make. First you will have an idea of what you like and someplace along the process you will think about what your budget might be. You can sit down with a pen, a napkin and an adult beverage and do your own design. Wait, wait, wait; don't do that!
The first house I built was done this way and it would be an understatement to say that this was a mistake. Your ego might tell you that you can do this but your pocketbook will later remind you just what a mistake it was. The other alternative is to pick a qualified designer that can guide you to a successful plan that will be beautiful, structurally sound and within your budget.
The folks at McCullough Design Group have now guided me through two different projects and in both cases has provided me with great results. Using them has saved me not only money, time and is some cases has helped to preserve my marriage.
All kidding aside though, the McCullough Group will always under promise and over deliver on their work. Building anything can be stressful but the folks at McCullough will make your project less painful and in the end you will feel that the design fees that you pay is one of the best investments you can make in your project no matter how large or small it may be.
At the end of the process you will be able to sit back and congratulate yourself for making such a wise decision. Then it might be appropriate to get out that napkin and adult beverage and propose a toast to the McCullough Group for making your dream a reality rather than the nightmare it could have been with your do-it-yourself design.
